2023 Festival of Landscape Architecture: UN/EARTH

AILA invites you to Tarntanya / Adelaide for the 2023 Festival of Landscape Architecture UN/EARTH, held on Kaurna Meyunna Yerta (Kaurna People’s Country) and surrounding regions from 19th - 22nd October.

UN/EARTH seeks to illuminate the worlds beneath us through exploration of the physical and metaphoric soil horizons upon which landscape architecture practice is founded. The eroding, geologic, cavernous, mineral, and organic processes that have shaped our planet's crust, so often hidden and beyond our gaze, are the primary source materials for UN/EARTH.

Critical and creative spaces for investigation are unearthed through a focus on varied landscape domains including soils, fertility, geological strata, subterranean infrastructure, mineral excavations, fossil records, enduring practices for living on Country, and archaeologies. Four themes - DEEP EARTH / RAW EARTH / FERTILE EARTH / SUBTERRANEAN EARTH - orientate the festival and its dialogues.

XIII CNAP - LANDSCAPE AND RESTORATION, Restoration as a driver of natural and cultural systemic processes of the landscape.   18-22 OCT 2023 Mexicali, Baja California

XIII CNAP - LANDSCAPE AND RESTORATION, Restoration as a driver of natural and cultural systemic processes of the landscape.  18-22 OCT 2023 Mexicali, Baja California

Restoration as a driver of natural and cultural systemic processes of the landscape

Two years ago we held the congress in the midst of the contingency, affected by a pandemic. So, we address the theme Landscape and well-being, with participations from home.

Now, new verve has been achieved. There are conditions to continue with the pending agendas. We are at an appropriate time to reflect on the possible starting points, to redirect our impulses, to rethink the future of our environments, to resume situations that were left unnoticed and to reintegrate tasks that remained on hold.

In all this time, we have had the opportunity to observe the deteriorations, the transitions and also the good practices. In this sense, the Society of Landscape Architects of Mexico has resolved that the act of restoring, that is, putting something back in its place, represents the guiding thread for discussing landscape. We will talk about the recovery of spaces of very different scales and their identity elements; to make history and memory visible through garden and park restoration projects; of ecological rescue with the improvement of soils, the use of native flora or the conservation of fauna; renovation of sites from the strategic management of plans, programs or public policies.

In this XIII CNAP we will approach dissertations, investigations and proposals for the design of landscapes, open spaces and gardens, both contemporary and historical, which respond to the Landscape and restoration premise through five thematic axes: design; resilience and innovation; ecology and sustainability; heritage, culture and art; governance and legislation.
This edition of the congress proposes an encounter with the most extensive ecosystem in Mexico and, at the same time, one of the least addressed: the desert. 41.24% of our territory is occupied by these arid landscapes, with a wide botanical diversity , biological richness and, in general, with exceptional values.

We extend this invitation to landscape architects, architects, urban planners, geographers, biologists, horticulturists, artists, designers, sociologists, teachers, researchers, and the general public, all interested in exhibiting their professional or academic work on environmental, social, or culture of the country In addition, a group of experts are invited to present their knowledge through keynote speeches.

The proposal is to meet to share experiences in Mexicali, the capital of Baja California, located on the northwest border of Mexico. In person, we will meet in "the city that captured the Sun", the land of the ocotillo, the cachanilla, the sweet mesquite and the cardón. We will appreciate the colors of this fertile desert: green and ocher. We will witness the restoration of the Colorado River, we will be in the impressive dunes that characterize the northern end of the country; On the way to the Sea of Cortez, we will contemplate the apparent infinity of El Salar; we will enjoy the warmth of its people.
